What do you want to be when you grow up?

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. – Romans 12:1

What do you want to be when you grow up?

We usually answer this question by saying what we want to do: Doctor, Lawyer, Teacher, Pilot, Billionaire…I want to do the activities associated with this job title.

And if we realise that we’ve not actually answered the question about what we want to be, then we might mention things like: Happy, fulfilled, financially free, independent, sober, peaceful etc.

But regardless of our response, the truth is that we’re answering the wrong question.

The real question is: what does God want me to be when I grow up?

Contrary to the predominant worldview, your life is not your own. You didn’t create yourself, and you didn’t spontaneously combust into being out of nothing, or randomly evolve into the uniquely designed being that you are.

God made you. On purpose. With an expected end in mind. To accomplish predetermined goals that you are wired to achieve.

And when you grow up, He wants you to be a living sacrifice…a person who will let Him use you for the purpose He created you for.

It’s not about the job. It’s about being completely yielded and surrendered to God, regardless of what position or situation He places you in.

So if you’re struggling to know your purpose and unsure of which career path to follow, relax.

You don’t have to figure out the details. All you have to do is decide to present your life to God as a living sacrifice…handing full control over to Him…and He’ll show you what He wants you to do.
