Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh. – Genesis 41:14
Joseph was stripped 3 times before he was brought before Pharaoh.
The first time, he was stripped by those closest to him (his brothers) who hated him for his dreams…because of how his dreams shifted the power dynamic in the relationship:
And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him; – Genesis 37:23
(It might have been a different story if Joseph had dreamt about his sheaf bowing to theirs).
The second time, Joseph was stripped by a woman trying to manipulate him into compromising his integrity, and settling for less than what God had promised.
And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out. – Genesis 39:12
(Her move: frame him for sleeping with her to encourage him to sleep with her. Joseph chose to look like the bad guy without being the bad guy. He chose to go to prison for a crime he didn’t commit rather than live in Potiphar’s house in a sin that he wouldn’t admit).
The third time, Joseph was stripped by himself. He took off the clothes of his history in order to receive his destiny.
Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh. – Genesis 41:14
(Joseph dressed for where he was going, instead of dressing to represent where he’d been.)
The first stripping took him to the pit and then Potiphar’s house.
The second stripping took him to the prison.
The third stripping took him to the palace.
Selah.
