Better than perfect

If we say, We will enter into the city, then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there: and if we sit still here, we die also. Now therefore come, and let us fall unto the host of the Syrians: if they save us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall but die. – 2 Kings 7:3

How can I make things better?

That’s a powerful question that can help you see the options available.

Yes, things are bad, but how can I improve things…even by 1%?

But one of the traps that you need to watch out for is being seduced by the idea of “perfect”.

Perfect is the enemy of better.

That’s because perfection is something that isn’t something you can control or guarantee…given all the variables involved. Also, your definition of “perfect” will change over time.

But what’s more useful is simply focusing on how to make things better.

Better than they are right now.

That’s something you can measure, and that’s something you can work on, regardless of your situation.

The stress comes when you try to make the leap from “here” to “perfect”.

The breakthrough comes when you take your eyes off the mirage of perfection, and enjoy the step by step journey of simply making things better than they are right now.

“Perfect” may end up being your destination.

But “better” is the only vehicle that can get you there.
