What am I not seeing?

O Eternal One, I ask You to allow my servant to see heavenly realities. The Eternal awakened Elisha’s servant so that he could see. This is what he saw: the mountain was covered with horses and chariots of fire surrounding Elisha. – 2 Kings 6:17 (Voice)

In every conversation, every meeting, every encounter, every event…there’s something you’re not seeing. And so at a basic level, it’s a good discipline to continually ask yourself the question “What am I not seeing?”

But the great news is that it’s not about your effort to see what you can’t see. Because in 2 Kings 6:17 we see that “the Lord opened the eyes of the young man” who was despairing at seeing the Syrian army around them…but wasn’t able to see the horses and chariots of fire around Elisha.

Throughout Scripture we see that it is God who created the Heavens and the Earth (Genesis 1:1); it is God who shut the door of the ark (Genesis 7:16); it is God who so loved the world that He gave His only Son (John 3:16); it is God who works in you both to will and to do according to His good pleasure (Philippians 2:13); it is God who has loved you with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3)…it is God who is the Author and Finisher of your faith (Hebrews 12:2).

Don’t worry about all that you don’t see. Just be aware that there’s always at least one thing you’re missing. And in each moment, lean on your Helper –  the Holy Spirit – and whisper: what am I not seeing?
