You had me at “Hello”

Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying, – Joshua 1:1

This blew my mind a couple of days ago:

the Lord spake unto Joshua.

This had never happened before.

Joshua had been serving Moses for years and heard God speak to Moses.

Joshua had even been living in the tabernacle where God dwelt under the old Covenant.

But God had never spoken to Joshua directly.

So this conversation in the first chapter of Joshua is a really big deal.

Trite applications that could be made from this are along the lines of God speaking to us at times of crisis. That “when life is most painful, that’s when we can hear Him most clearly”.

Blah.

That’s not the application I want to make.

I just wanted to point out that this Scripture is when God says “Hello” directly to Joshua.

God takes the first step in initiating a specific relationship with Joshua.

God comes to him at his lowest moment and speaks to him, gives him direction and personal assurances.

All of this under the Old Covenant where God dwelt with people, and not in people as He does in the new Covenant.

God loves you.

And that voice you hear is Him reaching out to say “Hello”.
