Double trouble

And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.

Genesis 39:12

Double trouble. That’s what “Egypt” means, and that’s the conundrum presented to Joseph by Potiphar’s wife.

In the moment she grabs him by the garment, Joseph has a critical choice to make.

Joseph has to choose between pleasing people or pleasing God. And Joseph makes the remarkable choice to appear guilty before men – leaving his garment in Mrs Potiphar’s hands – in order to remain blameless before God.

This choice to fear God rather than men causes him to be thrown in prison, falsely branded a sex offender, with all his dreams of greatness seemingly destroyed forever…until the moment God exhonerates him and makes him the most powerful man on earth.

Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler… (Psalm 91:3)
