It’s not about the venison

Go now to the flock, and fetch me from thence two good kids of the goats; and I will make them savoury meat for thy father, such as he loveth: – Genesis 27:9

It’s not about the venison, it’s about the savoury meat.

It’s not about the savoury meat, it’s about the different levels of intimacy. Esau’s level means he needs to go catch a deer to please his father. Rebekah’s level allows her to grab a couple of goats and cook a meal to please her husband.

It’s not about the different levels of intimacy, it’s about favouritism. Esau was Isaac’s favourite, and Jacob was Rebekah’s.

It’s not about favouritism, it’s about favour. “Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated” (Romans 9:13)

It’s not about favour, it’s about contrast. Works vs Grace. Esau has to go hunt, while Jacob receives something prepared for him without his effort.

It’s not about contrast, it’s about Covenant. God made a Covenant with Jacob while he was still in his mother’s womb…because he made a Covenant with his grandfather Abraham.

It’s not about Covenant, it’s about birthright. The blessing of Abraham passes to the firstborn.

It’s not about birthright, it’s about soup. That’s what Esau traded his birthright for, trading “eternity to get a toy”.

It’s not about soup, it’s about blindness. Having eyes that look but don’t see what God has blessed you with.

It’s not about blindness, it’s about the venison. The catalyst for Isaac to bless Esau. The diversion that allowed Jacob to claim what was now his by birthright.

It’s not about the venison…
