Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good character.” – 1 Corinthians 15:33
If anyone offers you something that is “99.9% chocolate cake”, the logical response is to ask: what’s in the 0.1%?
And if the answer is: dog poop or poison, then no matter how much you want to eat the cake…don’t eat the cake.
The 0.1% that could harm you negates the effect of the 99.9% that could bless you.
99.9% brilliant school teacher + 0.1% child abuser = no deal.
99.9% fun friendship + 0.1% dream killer = no deal.
The counterargument of “nobody is perfect” is misleading, particularly when “perfect” is used to mean inerrant or without flaw, rather than “complete”.
This isn’t about perfection. This is about the combination of two forces, where the negative effects of the one completely obliterate the potential benefits of the other.
But bigger than this, is the fact that you don’t have to settle for 99.9% chocolate cake…when you can easily have 100% chocolate cake.
And even if you don’t like chocolate cake, at least you know what you’re dealing with when you insist on 100%…instead of settling for 99.9%.
