But someone randomly shot an arrow that struck Israel’s king between the joints in his armor. “Turn around and get me out of the battle,” the king told his chariot driver. “I’ve been hit!” – 1 Kings 22:34
From Wikipedia:
Chekhov’s gun is a dramatic principle that every memorable element in a fictional story must be necessary and irreplaceable, and any that are not should be removed.
In other words, nothing just happens.
Your steps are ordered and directed by God. Everything that appears in the frame is there to do you good.
And even though Ahab may strap a bullseye target to your back, Jehoshaphat, whilst he disguises himself on the battlefield…even the arrow fired at “random” knows it’s not supposed to hit you.
Nothing just happens to you without God’s permission. Random events and chance are subservient to the purpose of God on your life.
So whether it’s Chekov’s gun or Ahab’s “arrow fired at random”, they’ve both been commanded by God to work together for your good.
